Back on January 20, 2017, Battle Creek's “crooked chiropractor” Robert Buckhannon was making like a bored housewife—cruising a Las Vegas Macy's and shoplifting.
Wait, what?!
Roughly two months after he returned from a two-week trip to Ecuador, Buckhannon was apprehended at a Las Vegas area Macy's store and temporarily detained.
Although he was not formally arrested, a Macy's Civil Recovery representative confirmed to me this morning that Buckhannon was detained by store security and photographed: and he was nabbed wearing a suit.
Dressing for success, I guess!
Official Macy's documents confirm Buckhannon was involved in a “theft incident at a Macy’s store” on January 20, 2017.
The state of Nevada has a law permitting retailers to recover civil damages from you as a result of this incident. Section 597.860 of the Nevada Revised Statutes provides that a person who “steals merchandise from a merchant is civilly liable for the retail value of the merchandise, plus damages of not less than $100 nor more than $250, plus the costs of suit and reasonable attorney’s fees.”
Macy’s demanded “payment of $520.23” from Buckhannon, who paid $100.00 on March 25, 2017.
Macy's offloaded the debt to Palmer Recovery Attorneys, an Orlando, Florida firm, to manage the civil damages settlement process. The Macy's rep confirmed that Buckhannon made a $100.00 payment on June 2, 2017 via Palmer—just four days before he plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, where he admitted misappropriating over $1.0 million from investors in his hedge fund.
And that's where the trail ends...or does it?
(If you spot Buckhannon at Walmart, alert store security.)
